Box
A miniature stage
A white box surrounded by black curtains becomes a miniature stage. I give people no instructions about how to pose or move. The space itself invites them to perform.

The photograph becomes a performance.
The box is an open invitation. Its boundaries are clear, but what happens inside is left to the person who enters. People reach, curl up, stretch out and play with the space. Hands, feet and flowers sometimes cross the white frame into the surrounding black.
I am interested in how this setting opens people up. Again and again, stillness gives way to movement, pleasure and an outward expression of something in them. I create the setting and choose the photographic moment; each sitter brings the performance.
Showing several moments from one sitting lets that performance unfold. The box stays in place while gesture, expression and the possibilities of the space keep changing.
